Session Three. "Hitler has only got one ball"

This session was all about the voice.

Due to illness we were fewer on the ground this week, this wasn't a bad thing as it meant we got to learn names and to split into different sized groups. We even had new swanky badges this week!

We started with trying to connect with our diaphragms, the large muscle which helps with projection and support for your voice. We tried various techniques from breathing through to silly and somewhat rude songs! (I very much hope to reprise these songs again)

We were concentrating on the meaning and intention behind words. How do you express meaning or a story if you are not allowed to say what you want? To look at this we were given random lines to say, "Hitler has only got one ball", "Just put some germoline on it", "Why is a black box orange" were some of the lines to be heard across the room.

This was then developed in to group work, again only using that one line, but then having to create a mini scene to present to the other group, who had to guess what you were portraying. Within our groups we created sound tracks, noise effects as well as the story lines to be acted out.

For me this week seemed harder in part than others. It took tie for people to warm up to only using one line, but once they had warmed up to the idea and played around with it a little some great bits of creativity were seen.

Once again it was a pleasure to be working with such a dynamic and broad range of people.

Second Session Success

So it appears we didn't manage to put everyone off with our first session, people actually returned!

This session we took turns reading aloud various poems that we had all brought along, from Seamus Heaney,  A.A. Milne, Roald Dhal to Margret Atwood to name a few. It was a pleasure just to hear such a range of poetry being vocalised and expressed, for me I could have gone home at that point as the poetry reading was a joy in itself.

We then worked in small groups exploring how to interpret our poems in to a tableaux. We showed these human pictures to others to see if they could guess which poems we were presenting.

We ended the session with interpretations of nursery rhymes. Its amazing how a very dramatic Humpty Dumpty or Jack and Jill, can have you in stitches!
